After World War II, French soldiers and their chaplains invited German soldiers and their chaplains to gather and pray together. This initiative sought to heal memories, reconcile the past by recognising their common identity as Christians in need of peace. Since 1958 the pilgrimage has expanded to include other countries of Europe, the Americas and other states.
In 2014, military pilgrims and their friends were very conscious of the difficulties throughout the Middle East, Gulf States and in Ukraine. 30 soldiers from the French contingent were baptised and 70 were confirmed during joy-filled ceremonies which marked their reception into a Christian community which they first discovered through the lives and example of their fellow military personnel. The 12,000 military pilgrims walked in the Torchlight Procession and prayed for peace in different parts of the world.
The gathering of musicians from Irish and UK delegation has been ongoing in recent years and has produced some memorable gatherings on the road outside our hotels.
This year’s gathering featured “Highland Cathedral” and “Amazing Grace” – an evening to “play in” the new tarmac laid on the day of our arrival (replacing that which was destroyed in last June’s flooding disaster along avenue du Paradis and in the Grotto area).

55th International Military Pilgrimage to Lourdes 2013
The 55th International Military Pilgrimage in 2013 gathered soldiers and their families from 35 different countries at Our Lady’s Shrine in Lourdes through the weekend of Friday 24 – Sunday 26 May 2013. The closing Mass for the Feast of the Holy Trinity was organised by the Irish delegation and some of the images projected on the screens during the Mass are below:
Quelques images et sons au Cerémonie d’Au Revoir; des images aussi des soldats qui expriment leur foi dans la Sainte Trinité! Some of the sights and sounds of music on the way to the Au Revoir Ceremony combined with soldiers expressing their faith in the Holy Trinity.
